Research and planning: Audience Theories (1-5)
The hypodermic model:
It suggests that the messages of the media go directly into the minds of the viewer. Te media may be seen as addictive.
Strengths
- The idea that the media has power to influence people draws attention to certain ideas about the media. such as media producers have a lot of power to create texts and that the kind of media texts of the media available to audience becomes a matter of argument etc.
Weaknesses
- This approach considers the audience to be passive and powerless, so this has been applied to women and children more often.
Cultivation theory
The more TV the audience watches the more likely they will develop certain views about the world, these may be negative.
Strengths
- This acknowledges the fact that people gain knowledge about the world through television.
It goes towards the idea that TV is an important feature of our social lives.
Weaknesses
- It doesn't measure these views against the audiences wider range of values and where they came from.
People may have gotten their views from life experiences, press etc
Desensitisation
Suggests that the audience will alter their attitude to violence if they view a lot of it repeatedly on screen. too much fictional violence is argued to make people desensitised to real world violence.
Strengths
- It brings attention to the amount of violence on screen and also raises questions about how much onscreen violence we should be exposed to as the audience.
Weaknesses
- It cannot be proved how attitudes have changed with this stimulus, as there may have been other variables.
Modelling or copycat theory
The theory that watching something negative will lead people to do negative things. It is a theory maintained by the press not research.
Strengths
- Parents report anxieties about their childrens behavior this keeps the idea going.
-Of the stratagies available to teach children good behviour limiting the amount of tv they watch is the most achievable.

Weaknesses
- the mimicking of a certain negative act may only be a short term issue, it may be a phase of which is grown out of.
Uses and gratification theory
The theory states that people 'read' into the media in different ways according to their individual differences. people may be affected by the media if their beliefs are affected or it enhances their role or image.
Strengths
- The audience is assumed to know fact from fiction
- The media is credited for giving pleasure to audiences and pleasure isn't seen as a bad thing.
Weaknesses
- Sometimes arguing for audience power is done at the expense of thinking about questions of media power or the power of certain texts.
- Some theorists have claimed that the media has no influence or power at all

Research and Planning: Cinema Trip
Went to the cinema last wednesday to see Riddick with my dad.
It was a 15 and the trailers on were the RIPD trailer, The call, a re-release of the nightmare on elm street. There were some others but none come to my mind at the moment.
The trailer for The Call gave me some ideas for the trailer that we plan to make, as it had a similar atmosphere that we imagined when we cam up with a couple of plot ideas for the pitch

Research and Planning: Trailer Analysis
This is the first crime/mystery trailer that i'm going to analysis. Its about 2 detectives, both have their own individual agendas although they are partners. They both have to find a serial killer of whom is killing people based on the 7 deadly sins.
Genre: This film is of a Crime/Mystery/thriller type of genre. It is set in an american city, looks like new York or Seattle. It has a dark feel to it at the very start,
Mise en scene: (Time stamps of video included)
First scene: (0.03) brad Pitt as a detective. He is in low key lighting behind him are square tiles on the wall. This could be a way to convey a feeling of order, as the pattern work is very simple and aligned perfectly from side to side; also from what I gather in the scene in an interrogation room. He himself is beaten up and has a cut on his forehead and a bruise on his nose. The impression this kind of gives is that his character is one he generally is quite a violent person, he would be quite violent with the people that he is arresting if they were to attempt to resist. His shirt is white and he is wearing black suspenders however the majority of his clothing is off the shot and therefore unimportant. The shot used was a close up, this would probably be to give the impression of a conversation, (Or that is what is going on) Since it seems like an police interview. However in this scene his posture from what I think seems to be quite laid back, so I don't believe he is personally involved in the case in anyway.
Next scene: Morgan freeman is sat on his own facing to the left of the camera off scene. The previous scene was the other detective sat with his wife, in the trailer this is a cutaway.
Sound: The trailer starts with a droning tone, This sets the mood of the film at the start of the trailer as a quite mysterious and dark. The trailer also uses excessively load sound effects. It exaggerates the sounds (Such as the banging and the metronome) This also sets an eerily quiet mood to the trailer and allows all the vocals from the characters to be heard clearly. The voice over is used in the absence of music, as it allows the characters and setting to become more obvious.
Cinematography: Fast paced editing, lots of close ups were used to show expressions of the actors, this gives the trailer a dramatic view. Another close up used was of the metronome, this gives it an important feel that it will be quite relevant to the plot in some form or another. Back to the editing, The editing is quite slow at the start as the music starts everything seems quiet as the main characters and there agendas are revealed, however this slow pace picks up very quickly after the 1st plot point has been revealed and the camera doesn't linger on a shot for very long, unless there is dialogue involved in the scene.
Audience: It would appeal to the more mature audience, Probably of a 21- 50 odd audience, Since it starts by showing the main actors pretty much immediately, i would say it is also targeted at fans of Morgan freeman and Brad Pitt. It doesn't seem to be specifically aimed at a class but would probably be consumed more by middle/upper class, as they have money and time usually. Probably less likely to be aimed at parents especially of young children.

Research and Planning: Audience theories Gratification model
Gratification model
-The audience is active, they use the text for their own gratification and pleasure.
- Audience is free to reject, use, or play with the media meanings as they see fit.
(eg If someone watches hollyoaks they may like what the people in it are wearing and then copy it)
This is the opposite to the Previous model.
Planning and Research: Audience Theories (Effects model/Hypodermic model)
1. The effects model:
- The consumption of the media has an effect or influence.
- This is a negative effect
- The audience is passive and cannot prevent the influence.
- Power lies with the message of the text.
Disney do this a fair amount.
(Eg. Beauty and the beast, message is don't judge people on their looks)
2. The hypodermic Model
- The messages in the media are injected into the media, by a syringe like media.
-The audience is powerless to resist.
- The media works like a drug and the audience is drugged, addicted etc.
(Dreamwork's Shrek his character injects a set of male conventions, this is a stereotypical male. )
Bobo the doll experiment
controversial experiment apparently proved that children copy violent behaviour. Involved children watching a woman beat up a clown doll, then they were introduced to the doll and proceeded to beat it to death.
